KENT FLOETER (Saginaw, Michigan, USA, 1937) è un importante artista americano. Educato alla Boston University School of Fine Arts, alla Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture e alla Yale University School of Art and Architecture, Floeter vive e lavora a Hoboken, New Jersey e a New York. Questa mostra, che si apre in contempoiranea all'ORATORIO DI SAN LUDOVICO e alla galleria di NUOVA ICONA a Venezia, rappresenta per l'artista la prima occasione espositiva in Europa da circa vent'anni.
L'ASSOCIAZIONE CULTURALE NUOVA ICONA come pure il cerchio curatoriale dell'Oratorio hanno il piacere di presentare il lavoro di K.Floeter, come significativo contributo alla scena artistica veneziana nelle ultime settimane della Biennale del 2001. Entrambe le mostre aprono lo stesso giorno, il 20 Ottobre all'ORATORIO alle 17.30 e poi a NUOVA ICONA alle 19. Dal 17 ottobre, su appuntamento, l'artista è disponibile per interviste.
Questo nuovo lavoro appositamente commissionato soddisfa un vecchio sogno dell'artista di poter lavorare in uno spazio sacro. L'ORATORIO, naturalmente, soddisfa questa necessità, benchè non sia più officiato. L'artista forma le sue idee dalla lettura soggettiva dello spazio, portando il suo pensiero su scultura e disegno in questo particolare contesto. E' la stessa cappella ad avere provvisto nuove idee, come pure una lettura psicofisiologica delle diverse prospettive all'interno dell'Oratorio. Il lavoro che ne risulta, può essere chiamato disegno scultoreo. Sarà possibile camminare intorno alla nuova struttura, ed essere consapevoli sia dello spazio originario della cappella che del nuovo spazio interno definito dal disegno. Questo vuol dire che l'ieri e l'oggi vengono presentati contestualmente e saranno percepiti come un insieme.
I lavori in mostra alla galleria di Nuova Icona sono soprattutto sketches, piante e disegni preparatori alla installazione all'Oratorio. In particolare i disegni presentano colori più vividi di quelli usati sino ad oggi dall'artista. Ulteriori informazioni sul processo di lavoro (e di pensiero) di Kent Floeter sono nella trascrizione di una intervista televisiva stampata sul poster che accompagna la mostra (disponibile in entrambe le sedi espositive).
Il lavoro di Kent Floeter è stato esposto, negli scorsi 30 anni, presso: Bykert Gallery, NY, Rolf Ricke, Cologne, De Gestlo, Cologne, Mary Boone Gallery, NY, Galerie Bernier, Athens, PS1 (con Dennis Oppenheim), Staedtisches Museum, Moenchengladbach, Schloss Morsbroich, Leverkusen, il Louisiana Museum, Denmark, Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo, NY, Hudson River Museum, NY, Max Protetch Gallery, la Whitney Biennale, NY, Museum of Modern Art, NY, Yale University Art Gallery, Pratt Institute Art Gallery, Brooklyn Texas Gallery, Houston, TX, Lehigh University Art Gallery, Pennsylvania, New Arts Program, Kutztown, PA e molti altri. Opere dell'artista sono state collezionate da privati come pure da istituzioni pubbliche.
La mostra si deve anche al generoso supporto dell'artista e del sig. Andrew Miller, presidente di Stephen David Editions, New York, come pure di altri che desiderano rimanere anonimi.
Stephen David Edition pubblica nel 2002 un importante catalogo sull'artista.

KENT FLOETER (born in Saginaw, Michigan, USA, in 1937) is an important American artist. He was educated at Boston University School of Fine Arts, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and Yale University School of Art and Architecture. He lives and works in Hoboken, NJ and in NYC. This exhibition, shown simultaneously at the ORATORIO DI SAN LUDOVICO and at NUOVA ICONA's GALLERY in Venice, represents the first in Europe in almost two decades.
The NUOVA ICONA CULTURAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ARTS as well as the new curatorial panel of the Oratorio are very pleased to present K.Floeter's work, which is a fitting contribution during the last few weeks of the VENICE BIENNALE 2001. Both exhibitions will open on the same day, October 20th at the ORATORIO at 5.30pm and then at 7pm at NUOVA ICONA's gallery. The artist is available for interviews, by prior arrangement, from October 17th.
This new work, specially commissioned, fulfils a dream the artist has had for some time; which is to develop and construct a work in and for a sacred place. The ORATORIO, of course, fits this description perfectly, although it is not used for ecclesiastical purposes any longer. The artist is getting his clues and shaping his ideas from his (subjective) interpretation of the given space, thereby attempting to bring his thoughts on sculpture and drawing into this spacial context. The chapel itself has provided new ideas as well as psychophysiological readings of different perspectives within the Oratorio. The resultant work is a sculptural drawing. It will be possible thus to walk around this new structure and to be aware of both the original chapel and the inherent new space as defined by the drawing. This means that yesterday and to-day are presented and perceived, contextually, together.
The works shown at Nuova Icona's gallery are the drawings, sketches, plans and site drawings which were all made in preparation for the installation at the Oratorio. The drawings, in particular, show much more vivid colouring than used in the artist's work to date. For more information about the work (and thought) processes employed by Kent Floeter, a transcripted Television interview with the artist is printed on the reverse side of the poster printed on the occasion (available in the two exhibition venues).

Fleter's work is in both private and public collections.
This exhibition would not have been possible without the enormous and generous support of the artist and Mr Andrew Miller, president of Stephen David Editions, NY as well as a number of others, who will remain anonymous.
